EVENT: 2015 Geoff Masel Lecture "The Insurance Social Contract: 1788 and all that" |
Summary |
Ian Enright will present the 2015 Geoff Masel Lecture. This presentation is inspired by Geoff Masel’s life and work. It will discuss our insurance contract statute law and common law in the context of its social and historical origins. |
Description
“1788 and all that” signals an irreverent look at the historical movements and people who made the insurance industry. The serious and good work of insurance involves integrity, innovation and implementation. We need to remind ourselves of the great achievements of the insurance industry through these virtues, and its occasional shortcomings, while reminding ourselves that a sense of fun is also necessary.
The historical cavalcade includes Jean Jacques Rousseau, Edward Lloyd, William Murray – Lord Mansfield, John Law, the Chevalier d’Eon, George I, John Julius Angerstein, Henry Montague Hozier, Cuthbert Heaton Heath, Michael Kirby, James Burns and Alf Pollard.
