EVENT: Ron Shorter Memorial Award - Professionalism in Public Speaking Finals

Summary In its inaugural year in Victoria, this award was first conceptualised by Ron Shorter prior to his untimely passing in 2012. The event was open to all young professionals from which three people were chosen as finalists

Description

CBP Lawyers and Unisearch are proud to sponsor the Victorian Ron Shorter Memorial Award for Professionalism in Public Speaking. The award was conceptualised by Mr Shorter prior to his untimely passing in 2012. It has been successfully running for 4 years in New South Wales. Victorian Young Professionals have upped the ante with record applications received by AILA Victoria for the state’s inaugural event.

Competition applicants were initially required to explain how they would benefit from public speaking, and, the insurance-related topic they would speak on if they were selected to participate.

AILA Victoria selected 22 participants, comprising a diverse mix of insurance industry disciplines, for the second stage of the competition that was held at CBP Lawyers’ offices on 3 June 2015.

Ms Jennifer Beard and Ms Jo Knorr of Polaris Coaching delivered intense training on key elements and the nuances of public speaking. Using their newfound skills the participants then spoke for two minutes on their insurance topics. They were judged by panel comprising Ms Beard, Ms Knorr, Mr David Randazzo of DLA Piper and Mr David Chew of HWL Ebsworths.

The finalists who were selected and their topics are:

  • Danielle Blaschuk Catholic Church Insurances

”Influence of customer service on the personal lines sector”

  • Laura Gaffey Gilchrist Connell

 “Insurance  - let’s get visible”

  • Alexander Morell Colin Biggers & Paisley

“Conflicting duties: the tripartite relationship between insurer, insured and defence counsel”

The finalists will now receive additional coaching from Polaris to prepare them for the final wherethey will speak for 15 minutes in front of 100 attendees from the insurance industry and three judges including:

  • His Honour, Emilios Kyrou, Justice of the Supreme Court of Victoria
  • Donna Walker, Executive General Manager, Broker Business, CGU
  • Noel Condon, Chief Executive Officer, AIG

The winner will receive the Ron Shorter Trophy, a Westfield Voucher worth $500 and the opportunity to speak publicly against Ms Divya Pahawa from Meridian Lawyers (the winner of the 2015 NSW competition) at the 2015 AILA National Conference. The runners up will each receive a Westfield voucher worth $200.
