EVENT: REGISTRATIONS CLOSED The Insurance Social Contract: 1788 And All That - 2015 Geoff Masel Lecture |
Summary |
The presentation is inspired by Geoff Masel’s life and work. It will discuss our insurance contract statute law and common law in the context of its social and historical origins. |
Description
Ian considers some recent developments in disclosure, utmost good faith, contract certainty and misconduct. He makes some predictions and recommendations about the law’s approach to these issues in the context of the social and commercial background to these principles. “The Insurance Social Contract: 1788 and all that” signals an irreverent look at the historical movements and people who made the insurance industry. We need to remind ourselves of the great achievements of the insurance industry through these virtues, and its occasional shortcomings, while reminding ourselves that a sense of fun is also necessary.
