EVENT: "Professionalism in Public Speaking" Ron Shorter Memorial Award 2015 - FINALS

Description

Now in its fourth year, the award was first conceptualised by Mr Shorter prior to his untimely passing in 2012. It is open to all young professionals across the insurance industry and aims to assist them to develop their public speaking skills.

The initial stage of the competition involved applicants explaining how they would benefit from public speaking and what insurance topic they would speak on if selected. Twenty applicants were chosen for the second stage which included public speaking coaching from Polaris. Following the coaching, participants gave a two-minute presentation on their topics. Three finalists were chosen. Each finalist will now receive further coaching before the final where they will present their topics for 15 minutes in front of the insurance industry and a sophisticated judging panel.

 The 2015 finalists and their topics are:

• Divya Pahawa from Meridian Lawyers: Blurring the lines between intention and negligence in the context of medical malpractice insurance.
• Naseer Taseer from GT Insurance: The role of an insurance broker in society.
• Mark Slaven from McCabes: The impact of climate change on the insurance industry.

The judges are:

• Justice Nigel Rein, Supreme Court of New South Wales
• Dallas Booth, Chief Executive Officer, National Insurance Brokers Association
• Leanne Mezrani, Editor of Lawyers Weekly
