Former High Court judge confirmed for conference

Former High Court judge Michael Kirby AC CMG is the keynote speaker at this year’s AILA annual conference on Hamilton Island on September 17-19.

Mr Kirby was a High Court justice from 1996 to 2009 and Australia’s longest serving judge when he retired on February 2, 2009.

He has been active in his retirement, having been appointed to several honorary academic roles at Australian universities, serving as the Institute of Arbitrators & Mediators Australia president from 2009 to 2010, and as editor in chief of The Laws of Australia.

In 2013 he was appointed a commissioner of the UNAIDS commission on sustainable health, which aims to advance global progress in achieving country set targets for universal access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support and to halt and reverse the spread of HIV.

Mr Kirby also headed a commission of inquiry on alleged human rights violations in North Korea.
