Remembering the devastation of Cyclone Gabrielle

NZILA President’s message – Kavita Deobhakta

A year ago, in 2023, New Zealand faced the formidable force of Cyclone Gabrielle, leaving a significant impact on the nation.

This powerful cyclone brought about widespread disruption, causing extensive damage to infrastructure, homes, and agricultural areas across regions. Despite the challenges posed by Cyclone Gabrielle, the collective response highlighted the industry’s preparedness and ability to come together in times of crisis, emphasising the importance of ongoing efforts to mitigate the impact of extreme weather events in the future.

In 2024 we remember and appreciate those who lost their lives in the events and recognise the efforts of individuals in the industry who are still working tirelessly to continue to mitigate loss and settle claims.

NZILA has started the year with the usual vigour and energy that the national committee brings. We are delighted to present members with a series of prestigious events scheduled to grace New Zealand’s insurance calendar. These events endeavour to enrich members’ professional development and contribute significantly to the advancement of knowledge and capability within our industry.

Starting the line-up was the highly anticipated employment law essentials webinar on 28 February. The session reviewed recent landmark Employment Court cases, offering invaluable insights into their application within the post-election landscape.

Following suit, our traditionally well received Meet the Leaders sessions are scheduled for Wellington, Auckland and Christchurch throughout March. The gatherings present a unique opportunity to engage with industry luminaries, gain profound insights into the future of insurance and insurance law, and pose pertinent inquiries in an informal setting.

In April, we shift our focus to the realm of cyber liability insurance with an in-person event scheduled in Auckland.

May sees the association delve into the role of AI in insurance via a comprehensive webinar. Members should prepare to explore the transformative potential of artificial intelligence within the insurance sector, guided by esteemed experts in the field.

As the year progresses, our pinnacle event awaits — the NZILA Annual Conference themed “Regeneration/Whakahounga”, scheduled for 4–6 September at Te Pae, Christchurch. The gathering promises three days of intellectual discussion, networking opportunities, and collaborative initiatives aimed at fostering industry growth and innovation.

For more details and registration, visit the dedicated events page on the NZILA website at nzila.org. Additional events and webinars will be announced soon, all of which will be promptly updated on the events page.

I hope 2024 signals a settled period for the industry, especially when it comes to weather events. I look forward to connecting with our New Zealand and reciprocal members during the year.
