Hamilton hosts 2014 AILA national conference

AILA’s 2014 national conference is on Hamilton Island, Whitsundays, Queensland, from Wednesday 17 to Friday 19, September 2014.

The conference theme is Shifting Sands.

Insurance industry representatives will have plenty to gain from attending this year’s conference on stunning Hamilton Island.

Australia’s exposure to natural disasters sets the scene for class actions with, most recently, the Queensland flood class action being filed on July 8, 2014, and the reported $500 million settlement for survivors of the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires in July.

AILA welcomes a panel of class action specialists, Robert Bain QC; Maurice Blackburn Lawyers’ Damian Scattini; DLA Piper’s David Leggatt; and Bentham IMF Ltd’s Andrew Charles, who will discuss aspects of class actions from litigation funding to aggregation clauses in the session ‘Class actions: From every angle’.

Steadfast CEO and managing director Robert Kelly will provide insight into current market conditions and McGrath Nicol chair Tony McGrath will discuss lessons learned from the HIH collapse and the need for further regulatory reforms in the industry.

Delegates can hear KordaMentha executive director Robert Cockerell speak about detecting deception in opponents and barrister Patrick van Grinsven will talk about negotiation tactics.

There will be a session on maintaining privilege from an in-house perspective with IAG group general counsel and company secretary Chris Bertuch.
